What is a Mazda Bongo?

The Mazda Bongo Friendee van, also known as a Ford Freda, SGL, or even a Montague arrives in this country as an eight seater MPV. Some have Mazda factory fitted kitchen units, but others are converted to camper vans once they are here. All of them have fold down seats downstairs to make a double bed, and on many models there is also an "Auto Free Top" elevating roof where you can sleep 2 more. Flat-top versions are also available. First made in 1995, they are usually (but not exclusively) automatic, and come in 2WD (SGL3) and 4WD (SGL5) versions. 2.5 turbo diesels are standard, although V6 2.5 and 4 cylinder 2 litre  petrol engines are starting to appear, and they are absolutely outstanding. Aircon or climate control, and electronic blinds or manual blinds are fitted as standard. In fact, all the trimmings of a luxury Japanese vehicle.

They are narrower than VWs, but just as roomy. And they cost a lot less.

As for those wacky names, well it is only made in Japan, and the name "Bongo Friendee" must have lost something in translation. In fact, the latest 2003 special edition is called the Bongo Friendee "Moving Cottage"!!! Ford Freedas are exactly the same, they are just badged differently (Ford own a big stake in Mazda ).
